Bottle buying guide

Best fit is our default. Spend less with Smart buy, or choose Upgrade when you want more character.

  • Base spirit

    Blanco tequila

Choose a bottle labeled 100% agave; bright pepper and citrus make the cleanest Margarita.

    • Best fit · RecommendedEspolòn BlancoApprox. $23–30 · 750 ml

Bright agave and a clean finish make this the safest Margarita pick.

    • Smart buyOlmeca Altos PlataApprox. $22–28 · 750 ml

Clean agave, citrus, and pepper deliver excellent mixing value.

    • UpgradeTequila Ocho PlataApprox. $42–55 · 750 ml

More cooked-agave and mineral character when tequila should lead.

  • Modifier

    Orange liqueur

For citrus sours, look for clear orange flavor and enough proof; richer brandy-based bottles change the style.

    • Best fit · RecommendedCointreau L’UniqueApprox. $27–38 · 750 ml

Clean sweet-and-bitter orange keeps both a Margarita and a Sidecar bright.

    • Smart buyDeKuyper Triple SecApprox. $7–12 · 750 ml

Simple orange sweetness for a budget Margarita or Sidecar.

    • UpgradeGrand Marnier Cordon RougeApprox. $32–45 · 750 ml

Brandy depth makes a richer Cadillac-style Margarita, not a neutral swap.

Verified technique note

Why this build works

The 2-ounce pour of blanco tequila gives this Margarita a clear agave foundation. Equal ¾-ounce measures of fresh lime and orange liqueur divide the sour and sweet-aromatic work instead of asking syrup to carry the balance. The optional ¼ ounce of agave is intentionally separate because lime acidity and liqueur sweetness vary. A hard 12-second shake supplies the cold water the compact recipe needs, while fine straining keeps small ice chips out of the coupe. Salting only half the rim lets each drinker control the seasoning sip by sip.

Common failure points

The Margarita is too sweet before it reaches the salted rim.
Leave out the optional agave until the shaken mixture has been tasted.
Every sip tastes aggressively salty.
Salt only half the rim and keep salt off the inside of the glass.
Measure or substitute

Reposado tequila can replace blanco ounce for ounce, but its oak character makes the drink rounder; triple sec may replace other orange liqueur at the same ¾-ounce measure, with sweetness checked before adding agave.
